Today, I am the Manitoba representative for Brazilian jiu-jitsu at my gym, Academy 64. As I age, I want to do what Master Behring is doing now and move to more of a coaching role. I want to have more students winning bigger tournaments. I want to take them to the Worlds.

Right now, the two Manitoba locations under my direction are doing well and our students are happy and satisfied. One of my former students runs our sister club in Transcona, Tapout Martial Arts, where we are at capacity. Another student of mine was 200 pounds, could barely walk up the stairs, and had Type 1 Diabetes. Now he’s an instructor and he’s accomplished his dream of becoming a police officer. We are also part of a community jiu-jitsu project in Roseau River First Nation. The two instructors are teaching jiu-jitsu to their students in their Ojibwa language. Those kids are happy. Their bodies are healthy. We’ve got kids that used to be fat from drinking Pepsi and eating chips. Now they’re training. Jiu-jitsu has a lot of structure and it’s good for kids. My goal is to take jiu-jitsu to the reserves in Manitoba where there is a lack of resources, depression, and poor nutrition, and give the kids there something to do so they can feel hope and stop trying to commit suicide. Jiu-jitsu and its training can change lives. Who knows what they’re capable of? I want to be the spark of a bigger flame, not the flame. I want everyone to feel excited and happy that I’ve come there for a seminar.
